First Lady

We believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ His only son our Lord who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead; and buried. The third day He arose from the dead, He ascended into heaven and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Church Universal, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting. Amen.

Bethel AME Church was founded by Rev. Robert W. Rawls a Flint native who was raised by parents who were among the founders of Vernon Chapel AME-Flint.

The doors of Bethel were open on June 18, 1978 with Rev. Robert W. Rawls as the Pastor. There were 10 members along with his wife Estelle who played the piano. Rev. Rawls worked close with members of Bethel to build the church. The building was once a very small store front, but through faith in the Lord and dedication to His Word Rev. Rawls, and the members began their quest to build this church.

Through constant prayer, evangelism and strong faith, the membership increased, enabling the building to be purchased.

The late Rev. Reuben E, Russell, Pastor of Vernon Chapel-Flint, was authorized by the late Presiding Elder Martin Luther Simmons, to conduct a service for the purpose of organizing the Mission into a Church in 1980, which in time was admitted into the Michigan Annual Conference.

Rev. Rawls and members held fund raisers and street revivals to bring people to Christ and to increase the membership. In 1984 the church began a remodeling project that took a year to complete. God gave Rev. Rawls a vision to convert the store front building into an edifice that would be recognized as today’s Bethel AME Church.  With no money, but much faith in God who gave him the vision, he began working on the building.  It was eleven years in the making and was completed in November 1996.

On Sunday, August 25, 2002 Rev. Robert W. Rawls preached his final Sermon, after 24 years as the Pastor of Bethel A.M.E. Church due to his retirement.  He remained a strong supporter and a guest speaker on many occasions until the Lord called him home on November 29, 2008.

Since Rev. Rawls retirement, there have been a number of energetic pastors assigned to Bethel who have enthusiastically worked to continue the church’s growth.

Rev. Andra Calvert (2002-2004), Rev. Dr. LaCreta Evans-Clark (2004-2005), Rev. Darren Penson (2005-2009), Rev. Andra-Tyiska-Johnson (2009-2010), Rev. Flinnoia Hall III (2010-2014), and Rev. Sharinese Jackson (2014-2015).

On October 25, 2015, Rev. Ansel Robinson was assigned to Bethel.  He is excited and ready to work.  We have a First Lady who works hand in hand with pastor and us.   We are truly blessed and look forward to what the Lord has in store for Bethel under the leadership of Rev. Robinson.  Our current theme is taken from Romans 12:2, “Transforming Minds for Christ”.
